Storytelling – It’s All About YOU!

September 17, 2025

Hooray and amen that companies will now and forever continue to hire real human beings with legitimate skills, critical thinking and decision-making aptitude. This is very good news for anyone who thinks that AI and machine learning will replace the authenticity and communication capabilities that jobseekers get to showcase in a cover letter and on an interview.

What is the ONE THING that you want your prospective employer to remember about you above everything else? Build a theme around your 20+ years of unique life experiences including education and work history and then tell a memorable and compelling story:

Who are you? What have you done? What challenges have you overcome?
What type of employee will you be, if hired? What makes you unique?

You’ll probably be asked some version of, “So, tell me about yourself” during the interview process and you should be well-prepared with colorful clues and dynamic stories about things like:

  • How your college major changed your life (or perspective, or career journey)
  • When and how you knew that you were ready for something BIG (this job, for instance)
  • A life event that served as a pivot point for your skills and career trajectory
  • Any story that showcases your values, judgment and motivations
  • A passion, an interest, a curiosity. Something truly unique to your spirit and soul

Write it all out and pay special attention to the versions of your story that make you excited and proud. Rehearse with a friend or in front of a mirror. Lock down the timeline and the details to deliver your story with emphasis and passion. Make a connection, build some rapport, show some emotion.

And then, drop the mic.
